Weber's Rationalization
As I look around the world I can see the obvious rationalization all around. From the way that we import and export trade, to our communications, to transportation. Besides tribal places in third world countries, I seriously can not think of one single aspect of world life has not been rationalized in some way by bureaucracy. Can you think of any???

pure love? pure spirituality?
ReplyDeleteI honestly racked my brain thinking about this question. Then I started seeing bureaucracy everywhere and it frustrated me that we are living in a society that is controlled by rationalities made by bureaucracy. The only other thing I could think of would be on a smaller scale like a basketball team; sure there is a captain, but how the game will end up is all up to the players. Of course, the team has a coach, but he is not the one that is out there playing the game. And I think Dr. Grineski put it perfectly, pure love and pure spirituality. Bureaucracy does not control the purest things, I’m a pretty religious person and even though priests tell us not to hide our relationship with God, and to spread the word of the gospel, bureaucracy could not dominate a person’s spirituality.
ReplyDeleteI think that there is no aspect of our lives that is not controlled by bureaucracy. Certainly for somethings it is extremely useful to have that sort of structure, but for other things that should flow more naturally, it is not. The problem is that people fear chaos and lack of control. The perfect amount of control is necessary, but different people have differing opinions about how much is too much or not enough. Pure love and pure spirituality are not regulated, but I doubt that they are absolutely free from the trappings of bureacracy.
